Western Zhou Dynasty (1027 – 771 B.C.)

the thick curved plaque finely carved on each side with a matching pair of fantastic beasts with horned human heads shown in profile at opposite ends of the arc, the faces detailed with large eyes and blunt noses above clenched lips continuing over the narrow edges, the bodies of the beasts aligned to fill the arc and decorated with D-shaped linear scales and scroll motifs in double-outline, pierced at each end for stringing, the translucent pale green jade with glossy surface showing some natural dark brown coloration at the lower edge on one side, remains of earth and lightly encrusted cinnabar widely scattered on both sides.

Length 4 316 inches (10.6 cm)

A jade huang pendant similarly carved with twin fantastic beasts with large heads at either end of the arc excavated in 1982 from a Western Zhou period site at Zhuanglixi village, Teng county, Shandong province, is illustrated in Zhongguo meishu quanji: gongyi meishu bian (Compendium of Chinese Art: Artifacts), Vol. 9, Jades, Beijing, 1986, p. 43, pl. 83.

Compare also the similarly carved jade huang with dragon heads at either end, in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Zhongguo yuqi quanji (Compendium of Chinese Jades), Vol. 2, Shang and Western Zhou, Shijiazhuang, 1993, p. 209, pl. 292.
