A WHITE JADE HUMAN HEAD AND DRAGON-FISH PENDANT

Western Zhou Dynasty (1027 – 771 B.C.)

the flat plaque carved on both sides with the head of a man of simian appearance, with thin lips and large nose crossing over the edge of the plaque to show the face in profile, the body below covered by a large dragon head also shown in profile and detailed with incised outlines, ending in a short fish tail, drilled with a tiny aperture through a blunt tab at the top for stringing, the translucent white jade smoothly polished, showing remains of earth and cinnabar.

Length 2 14 inches (5.8 cm)

Compare two very similar jade pendants of human and dragon design, unearthed from the Western Zhou cemetery at Fengxi, Zhangjiapo, Shaanxi province, illustrated in the catalogue of the special exhibition at the Shenzhen Museum, Yu shi zhi hun (Soul of Jade and Stone), Beijing, 2013, pp. 76 and 78.

Compare also the jade pendant of similar human and dragon design strung together with varied pendants and beads in an elaborate necklace unearthed from Qiangjiacun M1 in Fufeng, Shaanxi province and now in the Baoji Zhouyuan Museum, illustrated in the catalogue of the special exhibition organized by the National Palace Museum, Taipei, He he zong Zhou: Xi Zhou wenhua tezhan (The Cultural Grandeur of the Western Zhou Dynasty), Taipei, 2012, pp. 224-225.
