A PAINTED CIZHOU POTTERY PILLOW

Song Dynasty (A.D. 960-1279)

of elongated octagonal outline and bean shape, with concave platform top to serve as a headrest, boldly painted in iron pigment of rich chocolate-brown tone with a loosely tied spray of lotus, sagittaria and pond grass, highlighted with lightly incised linear and combed details, and enclosed within multiple borders, the steep facetted sides decorated with quickly brushed foliate motifs in the same dark brown pigment, all applied over a cream-white slip ground.
