A MOULDED DINGYAO WHITE PORCELAIN BOWL

Jin Dynasty (A.D. 1115-1234)

decorated on the interior with a lively pattern of peony blossoms shown ascending and descending on a continuous leafy scrolling stem filling the steeply rounded sides below a keyfret border near the rim and encircling the central recessed medallion decorated with a writhing chilong and scrolling flame motifs, all crisply moulded in relief, showing delicate veins and striations on the leaves and petals, the underside plain, the fine white porcelain covered with a transparent glaze of creamy tone partially covering the knife-pared ring foot and recessed base, the lip rim bound in metal.

Diameter 8 inches (20.3 cm)

A Dingyao bowl moulded with this pattern in the National Palace Museum, Taipei is illustrated in the Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of Ting Ware White Porcelain, Taipei, 1987, no. 52. The same bowl is illustrated again in Dingci Yishu (The Art of Ding Porcelain), Hebei Educational Publishing, Shijiazhuang, 2002, no. 171, p. 130. Another Dingyao bowl moulded with this same pattern is illustrated by Wirgin, Sung Ceramic Designs, B.M.F.E.A., No. 42, Stockholm, 1970, pl. 92a, from the Collection of the Seattle Art Museum.
