Jin Dynasty (A.D. 1115-1234)

the well-potted pear-shaped vessel with tall cylindrical neck rising to a trumpet-shaped mouth, painted in iron-brown over a white slip ground with three freely brushed geese in flight around the center of the vase, between bands of loosely drawn foliate sprays on the sloping shoulders and the rounded sides above the wide ring foot, the footrim and recessed base left unglazed showing the gray stoneware body.

Height 11 sup>7⁄8 inches (30.2 cm)

No other example of this pattern appears to be published, but a Cizhou pottery vase of very similar form painted with peonies and foliate bands in iron-brown is illustrated in the catalogue of the Osaka Municipal Museum exhibition entitled Charm of Black and White Ware: Transition of Cizhou Type Wares, Osaka, 2002, no. 86, p. 103, from the Matsuoka Museum of Art.
