A WHITE JADE HANDLE SHAPE PLAQUE

Western Zhou Dynasty (1027 – 771 B.C.)

of narrow oblong shape, carved on one side with the profile image of a crested bird with hooked beak encircled by its own long spiral-scrolled tail feathers, below a plain waisted tab, the reverse plain and concave, drilled with a pair of holes at either end, the white jade of pale greenish tint, showing remains of earth and cinnabar.

Length 2 18 inches (5.4 cm)

Compare the jade handle shape plaque carved with a similar crested bird motif excavated at the site of the royal cemetery of the Yan State, Liulihe, Beijing, and now in the Beijing Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, illustrated by Gu (ed.), Zhongguo chutu yuqi quanji (Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China), Vol. 1, Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Beijing, 2005, p. 5.
