the small bird with long tail shown as a simple silhouette with wings folded, the eye pierced, the translucent pale yellowish jade showing traces of earth and cinnabar.

Length 1 38 inches (3.6 cm)

A similar bird form pendant of smaller size unearthed in 1979 at Liutaizi, Jiangjixiang, Jiyang county, Shandong province, is illustrated in Zhongguo yuqi quanji (Compendium of Chinese Jades), Vol. 2, Shang and Western Zhou, Shijiazhuang, 1993, p. 181, no. 252, with description on p. 302, described as early Western Zhou.

Another small jade bird pendant of closely related form excavated at Qianzhangda, Tengzhou city, Shandong province, now in the Institute of Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, is illustrated by Gu (ed.), Zhongguo chutu yuqi quanji (Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China), Vol. 4, Shandong, Beijing, 2005, p. 126, described as late Shang.
